A FUNNY, MOVING, WISE BOOK The world changes; the Grump doesn’t. Nowadays folks and touch screens demand a bit of delicacy, while the Grump belongs to the heavy-handed generation. He lived through the war (WWII), shortages and reconstruction, and he’s used to doing everything for himself. But now the Grump’s beloved wife is lying in the inpatient ward at the local hospital and his son wants to put him in a nursing home. As the boundaries of life shrink, this old codger’s battle against modernity grows. Every day the Grump goes and feeds and cares for his demented wife, but there’s no way he’ll suffer the same fate. The Grump will not put himself at the mercy of others. He intends on leaving this world wearing his own boots, not a pair of hospital booties. Which is why he has to prepare for his funeral in plenty of time. He builds a coffin, writes his memoirs, and of course plans the menu and music for the memorial service. He also needs to get his last will and testament down on paper, but the ink in his heirloom pen has run dry. The Grump and his son head out to crisscross Finland by car, hunting for ink in a world that has moved on to laser printers. These days, folks pay with bonus cards instead of cash. Spoons have been replaced by chopsticks. Buttermilk by red wine. And women do men’s work. Old folks are rehabilitated as if they were world-class athletes, but they’re spoken to as if they were children. Which isn’t to say there aren’t a few good things about modern times, too. The Grump learns that you can use one of those handheld televisions to journey into the past, that flat screens show news from the era when news anchors were still gentlemen and Finland did well in the Olympics. The Grump, who has spent his whole life in his own neck of the woods, is able to explore the streets of Vladivostok and Jerusalem online. During his travels, the Grump reflects back on the beginnings of his life and the lives of loved ones, to birth and childhood. He realizes that the most important things never change. Babies, love, taking care of each other. He even admits to having been wrong during the course of his life. Twice. At the end of the story, the old man decides turn his coffin into a crib for a new-born member of his family: “I’ll make a gift, one where a little feller’ll be happy banging on the slats and sleeping and just having him all kindsa happy times.” The humour of Tuomas Kyrö’s Happy Days of the Grump springs from the main character’s inimitable attitude and tenacious resistance to modern vanities. It is a book that is fun, moving, and wise.

About the Author/作者介绍: 作者 托瑪斯. (Tuomas Kyro)

Tuomas Kyro (b. 1974) is one of themost versatile, prolific, and acclaimed Finnish authors of his generation. Kyro says that he decided immediately upon the release of his debut work that he would write everthing he could come up with himself and everything anyone commissioned. Nowadays Kyro spends his time doing the things he detested ten years ago: cross-country skiing and violating his literary principles. He also appears on the television program Good and Bad News.
